Loving Life: 5 Tips for Business Owners to Find Genuine Work/Life Balance

Loving Life: 5 Tips for Business Owners to Find Genuine Work/Life Balance

With advancements in technology, it’s easier than ever to stay connected to the workplace 24/7. Leaving the office at 5 p.m. doesn’t necessarily mean you’re done working for the day, especially when you’re the owner. While working hard to make your business grow and succeed is important, so is having a personal life outside of work. All work and no play is detrimental to your health.

So, as the owner of a company, just how do you achieve that elusive level of work/life balance that leaves you happy, healthy, and productive? Keep reading to discover several tips to that end.

1. Embrace Technology

To make your job easier and less time-consuming, you should embrace technology that automates repetitive tasks. For example, easy AP automation saves tons of time and money. Accounts payable has always been a manual task that requires hours of data entry, which is prone to human error. By using AP automation software, you eliminate the human error factor, thus reducing costly mistakes and decreasing the time it takes to crunch all the numbers.

Besides AP automation, there are many other ways to automate processes in a business to save even more time and money and make your life easier.

2. Leave Work on Time

Working extra long hours is bad for your health. It increases stress levels that can lead to heart disease, obesity, and more. You may feel guilty for not dedicating enough time to work, but the reality is that just because you’re at work doesn’t mean you’re being productive.

Choose a set number of hours you need to work each week, and stick to them. Leave the office at the same time each day, and commit to enjoying personal time with loved ones and doing things you enjoy. Having this downtime may actually result in increased productivity when you’re at work.

3. Take Short Breaks Throughout the Day

Most businesses allow the standard number of breaks, which may not be enough to achieve a satisfying work life. Studies show that taking multiple short breaks (no more than 20 minutes) throughout the day increases productivity and satisfaction overall. Just getting up from your desk for a short walk, a quick snack, or a delicious coffee can be enough to rejuvenate you and carry you through the rest of your day.

4. Learn to Say No

As the owner of a company, you are probably inclined to accept any and all work to make more money and keep clients happy. While this is an admirable trait, it does little to help you achieve a healthy work/life balance. Excessive work means less time spent with the people, places, and activities you love. So, learn to say ‘no’ from time to time to avoid stretching yourself too thin.

5. Make Time for Fun

Your workdays are busy, and there never seems to be enough time to get it all done. To make sure you’re achieving a good work/life balance, you need to create time for fun. When your schedule includes time for fun outside of work, you’re more inclined to follow through with leisure time, leave work on time, spend time with family and friends, and take vacations.

Growing a successful business takes effort, but spending every waking moment at work can leave you feeling deprived and unhealthy. You must find a happy medium between your work life and your personal life to fully achieve a healthy, enjoyable, and productive existence as a business owner.
