Why a Strict Schedule is Important for Home Learning

Homeschooling is getting popular as a practice owing to the flexibility it lends to students and parents. Without doubt, it’s a great way to stay on top of your daily schedule, learning format and pace. However, families who adopt this approach must have a fixed schedule that they follow religiously.

Schedules let us stay on top of when things need to be done, whether there is a deadline and provide a benchmark to work towards to gain accomplishments. Whether you are just starting out with teaching at home or have been doing it for a while, it is a good idea to set a schedule that works for your family and is flexible enough to make adjustments as dynamics change.

First, decide on a reasonable time for everyone to start the school. This means they should be dressed for the day, have eaten breakfast and completed whatever chores the family assigns (i.e. making the bed, putting up night clothes, etc.). This start time ensures that everyone is synced together. Younger children may need more help and guidance but when you establish some rules from the beginning, helping them grow up with this organized approach. Another advantage of setting a time is helping kids get into the frame of mind they need to learn and study.

In addition to providing a shared understanding, a schedule keeps everyone in sync. When searching for online home school programs, look for options that offer part or full-time teacher instructions so parents can dedicate their time to little ones who need their attention with a print curriculum.

One last tip to consider is to place the printed schedule at different places in your home, whether it is the kitchen, school room, living area or the bedrooms so that everyone is on top of their schedules. It is a good idea to revisit the schedule prior to the start of each school year to assess the changes in grades and student ages because what worked for someone as an elementary student may not be as beneficial as a middle-schooler or a student in high school. It is okay to change it and even to deviate occasionally but be sure to get back on track as soon as you can to keep students active on their portal.

Organization is one of the best ways to set goals, keep track of progress and ensure everyone is working with the same expectations every day. When you start searching for online homeschool platforms, make sure it offers a lesson plan with both print and online curriculum to aid in setting up the day for students and the parent. Your school schedule may not look like anyone else’s, but as long as it works for your students, it is a worthwhile investment in efforts.
