‘Language is wine upon lips” – that’s an age old adage of a bygone era – an era of odes and sonnets, and Shakespeare (not ‘of Shakespeare’). Today, language is more like tequila down the throat. The comparison is stark. Undoubtedly, the zappy-ness and the crunchiness of the later hits you harder.
The smooth Shakespearean drink, on the other hand, is to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. There is no scuttle – absolutely no haste about the Bard’s inking. The William was anti brevity. He liked his word sewn together like a festoon of a million pearls, lacing together a million ideologies.
The Bard was a drama-driven protagonist of cities, towns, hamlets and metropolitans. The widely read, devoted 23 years of his entire life to artistry. Through whatever little is known about his biography, he lived till the age of 52. In those 20 something years of his creative pursuits the world got to know two Bards – Bard the writer and Bard the actor. It was evident that the heart of one was firmly placed in the beat of the other. Bard’s acting was propelled by his writing. The former was a baritone version of the phrases strung in concert of William’s life.
Inimitable in the most palpable of ways, Shakespearean writings have been often used as a bait to net the flaws of modern day writers. The elaborate metaphors that made his works almost poetic at every plane were his preferred ornaments of writing. A freer flow of words that reflected in his scripts can without a misgiving be contributed to his uncanny ability to steer away from prose and stick to satire. The world today, for apparent reasons, connects with the later better.
In literature they distinguish his style as that of metrical pattern – a continuous spinning of sentences threaded to the same thought, creating a pattern of musings. Whether he elicited romance through his works or reflected on the layers of tragedy and tragicomedy, Shakespeare’s craft was a craft of conviction. There was a life-force in his interpretation of situations which echoed in his plays and prose. Bard’s quips bequeathed a great degree of lore. Even on the shallowest of planes they were a profound picture of human emotions and philosophical conundrum.
