Moving Out of Home for the First Time? Here Are Some Top Tips

Moving out of your family home can be quite an intimidating process. When you’re used to living comfortably with your parents (and siblings if you’ve got sisters or brothers), taking a big leap into independence can be scary.

However, we all need to fly the nest at some point, and although scary, moving into your own home is one of the best things you’ll ever do. You can create a space that is your own, decorate your rooms exactly how you like, and experience true independence as an adult.

Whether you’re buying your new home or renting, you’ll need to organize many things to ensure that your move goes smoothly. But don’t fret! This article will give some top tips to make the process easier and less stressful.

Purchase Your Sofa Early

It’s no secret that sofas can take a long time to arrive after you’ve placed an order, especially if they are handmade. However, it’s easy to forget about ordering your sofa when you’re in the middle of organizing a move.

Order your sofa as soon as possible to prevent delays and ensure that you have somewhere comfortable to sit when you settle into your new place. Ideally, you should purchase your sofa at least two months before you’re due to move to be on the safe side.

If you’re moving into an apartment, make sure you get one of the apartment-friendly sofas on the market so that the delivery people can get it safely into your apartment.

Declutter Before You Move

You probably don’t realize how many things you’ve accumulated while living at your parent’s house. It’s only when you start packing everything into boxes that you realize the sheer volume of belongings you own!

To reduce your workload and save money during your move, consider decluttering before you begin packing things away. Get rid of the items that you no longer want or need. You can give them to a local charity shop, gift them to your friends or relatives, or throw them away if they’re no longer usable.

Change the Locks as Soon as You Move

When moving to a new property, it’s good practice to change all of the locks (including the front door and all of the windows) as a safety precaution. This is especially important if you’re buying the property.

You never know to who the previous owner has given a set of keys, so you don’t know who has access to your property. It’s easy to forget who has a set of house keys when you’ve been living in the same place for years, so the previous owners might have handed out keys in the past but can no longer remember.

Changing your locks is a precautionary measure that prevents anybody from being able to access your home without your permission. It’s a quick and inexpensive process, so it’s absolutely worth doing when you first move into your new home.
