Virtually everyone wanders through life with an endless lineup of intricate questions. Where did my personality come from? Which career path should I choose? Will I ever find happiness? What does my future hold? Why are we all here?
Searching for Answers
Some people say there are no real answers to these questions. Life is nothing more than chaos thrown together in a haphazard manner ultimately destined for an abrupt end. Others believe there’s far more to life than chance. Many swear the answers lie in the stars. Some take matters a bit further, insisting numerology is the key to unlocking those hidden explanations.
A Brief Explanation of Numerology
Numerology is essentially the study of numbers and how they affect people’s lives. It’s based on the belief that everything in the universe rests on numbers. This principle dates back thousands of years and is often credited to Greek philosopher and mathematician, Pythagoras.
Experts in the field and followers alike feel numerology can provide the answer to virtually any inquiry. From understanding certain personality traits to predicting the future, mathematics holds the power of revelation. While countless numbers factor into the equation, four core numbers form the basis for individual discovery.
Life Path Number
This is the most significant aspect of a person’s numerology chart. To find this number, start off with your full birth date and reduce the month, day and year to a single digit by adding together the digits of each component. Say, for example, your birth date is 04/20/1999.
0 + 4 = 4
2 + 0 = 2
1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 28
Since the year adds up to a double-digit number, keep reducing by adding its digits.
2 + 8 = 10
1 + 0 = 1
From there, add the single digits together to create the life path number. In this case, it would be 7. This number is crucial in determining unique traits, what will come about in the future and other important points.
Next comes the expression number. This one is determined by the numbers corresponding to the letters in a person’s full name at birth. Mary Jane Smith would become 4197 1155 14928. Then, the numbers in the first, middle and last name are added together and reduced to single digits much like the birth date for the life path number.
4 + 1 + 9 + 7 = 21 1 + 2 = 3
2 + 1 = 3 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 24
1 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 12 2 + 4 = 6
Add those three final numbers together and reduce to a single digit. For this example, the expression number would be 3. Number and letter correspondence charts are readily available to help with this figure. Expression numbers offer insight into personality traits, strengths, weaknesses and other elements.
Heart’s Desire Number
Determining the heart’s desire number is similar to finding the expression number except, in this case, only the vowels in each name are used. For the previously used example, those would be:
Once again, each is transformed into a single digit, and the three final digits are added together and reduced. Mary Jane Smith’s heart’s desire number is 7, and it delves into the underlying reasons for making certain decisions in life.
Birth Day Number
Birthday numbers are the simplest ones to calculate. They’re nothing more than the number of the day on which a person was born, and no adding or reducing is required. In sticking with our example, the birthday number would be 20. This number indicates a person’s inner gifts and how they play into his or her overall life path.
All Things Considered
These four numbers make up the basic elements and attributes of each individual. They also work in tandem with one another and several others to piece together the bigger picture. At the same time, different numbers hold various specific meanings. While all this may sound complicated, it’s really just a simple matter of doing the math and understanding the deeper meanings hidden within.
