Longing For A Road Trip? Here’s How You Can Plan The Trip Of A Lifetime

A recent survey by AA travel revealed that 53 percent of travelling families expect to pack up their cars for a road trip this year. For car lovers, college students, families and adventurers alike, the ability to visit scenic locations without having to deal with security lines and hefty baggage fees at airports is what draws them to take road trips. But in order to achieve the ultimate road trip experience, proper planning needs to be done.

For example, you have pick the right luggage, choose the right car and even decide who to go with to make sure you have the trip of a lifetime.

Choosing companions

The most important part of planning a road trip is putting together the perfect travel crew. Since you’re going to be stuck in the vehicle with them for days on end, there are likely to be some high-stress moments, so choose wisely. If you decide to go with a family member, it’s best if it is someone that you get along with. Just because your companion is a relative, it doesn’t mean you won’t end up at each other’s throats during the trip.

A road trip with friends is also a way to create amazing memories and stories that you’ll be proud of 30 years from now. So choose someone who can adapt to changing plans, has a good sense of humour, and who can take their turn at the wheel without making everybody fear for their lives.

Prepare the car

If you already have the car that you plan to use for the road trip, be sure to take the car for a check up at least one week before the trip. You can enlist the services of a mechanic to check your car’s fluid levels, tires and anything else that could cause issues.

Ensure that you have extra wiper fluid, an inflated spare tire and jumper cables just in case your car battery dies: there’s nothing worse than getting stranded in the middle of nowhere. When it comes to choosing a road trip car, look for something that has enough cargo space for your gear and one that uses fuel efficiently. This way, you’ll be able to pack everything you need and save money on fuel.

Also keep in mind what activities you plan on enjoying on your trip. Are you going to visit a national park? Remember to pack your hiking boots! A photography tour? Bring those spare batteries and memory cards.

If you’re using your own vehicle, consider getting backup custom-fit car seat covers so you have something to change to in case a mess happens in your auto. Cleaning dirty car seat covers can take time and cause a lot of hassle. It’s better to have extra covers so you can replace the dirty ones immediately. Also, consider bringing a weatherproof car cover and other protective auto accessories to minimize the damage on your vehicle throughout your road trip.

Choose a route

Choosing the perfect route is the key to experiencing memorable and photo-worthy road trips. You can make use of road trip planning tools, such as roadtrippers and triphobo, which have a wide variety of routes available for every kind of trip. A memorable trip can also be one with a route that allows you to visit friends and family you haven’t seen in a while.

The upside of stopping by your friends and family is that you get a local’s perspective on the destination you’re visiting, such as the newest museum or the coolest waterpark. Also, since half of the fun of a road trip is all of the little stops along the way, you can plan your route to go through national parks, capital cities, or photo-worthy scenic routes.

And now, perhaps the most important part: create a music playlist and give everyone the chance to add their favourite tunes. Once you’ve decided on a route and made all the necessary preparations, it’s time to head off on the road trip of a lifetime.
