Leveling Up: 3 Ideas for Getting Ahead in 2019

Leveling Up: 3 Ideas for Getting Ahead in 2019

2019 is officially upon us — which means it’s time to start leveling up. New year, new you as they say. So where to start? Admittedly, it can be a bit daunting figuring out where to begin, what to change, and what to improve on.

However, if you’re ready to hit the ground running this new year, but need a push in the right direction, here are some ideas to get you started:

No Regrets

Not pursuing advanced education is one of the 25 deathbed regrets, according to Forbes. This is not to get you thinking about your own demise, but going back to school — specifically, college and higher education-level classes — is likely something you’ve thought about but have also been putting off. You don’t want to keep putting it off until it’s too late, though.

Luckily, these days, schools are making it easier than ever to pursue your education goals. For example, a lot of graduate programs like MBAs don’t require the GMAT or the GRE. Furthermore, the availability of online schools has grown significantly over the years, making it more convenient for working adults.

It’s understandable to feel apprehensive. Life keeps your hands full, and adding the pressure of homework, group projects, and class time can quickly become too overwhelming. However, it’s time to give yourself more credit! If the idea of going back to school (whether online or in person) has a firm, unrelenting place in your heart and mind, then 2019 is the perfect time to start this new adventure.

Fixer Upper

Whether you rent or own your place, it’s likely in need of some TLC — and we’re not talking about your average spring cleaning. Our home is often our sanctuary. It holds our memories, our favorite spot to curl up with a book, and generally is the place we feel most comfortable in. However, it’s important to show your place some love so it can keep being your go-to safe space.

While regularly cleaning your place is always a good idea, making room in your schedule to mend any holes in the walls, broken doors/hinges, and even replace your broken blinds can transform your place (and enhance your mood). A fresh coat of paint or a new, bold color is also a simple, yet effective change. You also should consider having your place inspected for hidden internal problems. For example, asbestos is still a threat, particularly old buildings and homes. There are other harmful contaminants as well, such as lead paint and black mold. Harmful substances like these can make you ill, or even cause death. It never hurts to have your space checked out, especially if you aren’t aware of when it was last inspected. Call a local professional and enjoy the relief of knowing you aren’t harboring any silent killers within your home this year.

A New Spin on Wellness

Self-care in 2019 doesn’t have to be all face masks and hot baths. Self-care in 2019 looks a lot like taking care of your health: Finally going to an optometrist to determine if you need glasses (seriously! It’s time to stop squinting). Finally pushing yourself to find a local therapist you really connect with in order to get your mental health in tip-top shape for everything this year is sure to throw your way. Finally getting those yearly checkups you seem to put off every year. Self-care can even look like eating more superfoods, walking every day, and staying away from excessive alcohol use.

In a time where many adults are overworked, underappreciated, and underpaid, making your mental, physical, and spiritual health a priority is essential. While it’s important to maintain your health not only in 2019, but every year, if you find that you often struggle to keep up with your wellness, consider asking for help. Whether that’s the decision to get a personal trainer, take a budgeting class, or simply rely more on friends for motivation, finding the determination at the beginning of the year can help maintain your efforts throughout the rest of the months. Self-care might not always be easy, but it’s ultimately worth it to find the time to take care of yourself.

Each new year holds an endless amount of possibilities. While that thought can become overwhelming at times, it’s important to take a deep breath, find your center, and focus on “leveling up.” It’s always worth it to push yourself outside your comfort zone, but remember you don’t have to overexert yourself with new year expectations. Good luck!
