1. Check If Manuka Honey Is From New Zealand

First of all you need to be sure that it is from New Zealand. You may not be aware but New Zealand cannot import honey as there is a ban for such import. This indirectly means that a honey from New Zealand will be originally from New Zealand.

Interestingly , the government of New Zealand introduced rules back in 2017 which suggested that every batch of honey should be tested independently in the lab. The honey must comprise the 4 chemical markers.

Apart from these 4 markers, one additional marker should be a DNA marker unique to Manuka Bush1. All these five markers need to be there to prove that manuka honey is legally exported.

If you are wondering that as a consumer how can you search for such markers then just find the gold symbol. A gold tested certified manuka symbol on the honey jar will prove the legal requirements have been met and it is the authentic version.

2. Check If Manuka Honey Was Packed In New Zealand

Next you need to check for tampering. To ensure that honey has not been tampered you need to buy the one which clearly states that it is packed in New Zealand. If you will be purchasing the ones with the label of packed in New Zealand then you can be assured that it is sealed into the jar before exported from New Zealand.

If there is no such promise on the packaging then there is a high probability that honey has been adulterated. A honey without such a label is often diluted with the honey of cheaper versions.

You might be surprised but such honey is often mixed with sugar syrup and other chemicals which makes it ineffective. So always look for

Packed in New Zealand label.

3. Check For The Manuka Umf 10

You might not be aware as a consumer that manuka honey contains a natural compound called methylglyoxal. This is a rating which shows how strong the properties are in the honey.

You do not have to go into the details and torture your braincells, but just know the basics. One must at least know that the higher manuka umf 10 is the higher the strength of honey is .
