CBD & THC: The Benefits, Side Effects, And More

Marijuana has been used for thousands of years for both medicinal and recreational purposes, in fact, some of the earliest recorded mentions of marijuana are in Indian medicinal texts. Millions of people worldwide consume cannabis on a daily basis to help manage chronic conditions as well as improve their overall quality of life.

The mechanism through which marijuana has such a profound effect on the human body is through something referred to as the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system deals with a laundry list of bodily functions like mood, appetite, and sleep just to name a few. When marijuana is consumed, cannabinoids from the plant intermingle with our built-in endocannabinoid system to make changes. The cannabinoids that have the most profound effects are THC and CBD. There are over a hundred different cannabinoids in the marijuana plant, but those are the two that have the most profound mental & physical effects.

Let’s go over some basic information about these two wonderful chemicals.

The Benefits Of THC and CBD

THC & CBD work on their own to provide a staggering amount of health benefits but it’s worth mentioning that they work much better together by what’s referred to as the entourage effect. The entourage effect is that these two chemicals work better together than they can alone.

THC and CBD are renowned for their pain relieving attributes. This is primarily because they reduce inflammation throughout the body which reduces pain directly as well as makes the person more relaxed and able to use their body properly. Because of this marijuana is frequently chosen by pain sufferers instead of highly addictive and sometimes ineffective opioid pain medications. Studies have confirmed THC’s pain relieving qualities.

These two cannabinoids also function as an extremely effective treatment for insomnia. A few hours after consumption the user will feel extremely relaxed and drowsy.

CBD & THC are also fantastic at reducing both seizure intensity and seizure frequency in epileptics, making it an attractive treatment option for many epilepsy sufferers.

Side Effects of THC and CBD

Since the endocannabinoid system is quite delicate and needs to have some semblance of balance, there are of course side effects that are undesirable to some should their consumption reach too high a level. Sometimes these side effects are so grave that a user will seek out THC detox to return them to their pre-marijuana selves faster.

The most commonly reported side effect of using THC & CBD is what’s referred to as brain fog and it manifests itself as a slowing down of someone’s mental processes, sometimes to the point where people have difficulty picking their words or taking the initiative to start a task. Besides that, anxiety is frequently reported among those who also suffer from marijuana induced brain fog.

As I said earlier, the endocannabinoid system also deals with appetite and sleep, so sometimes people have these aspects of their body changed for the worse as well. Habitual marijuana users might find it difficult to eat or sleep without having first consumed some of the drug.

Parting Words

THC & CBD aren’t for everybody, but for some it’s like a magical cure to what ails them. People who suffer from seizures as well as cancer patients derive great benefit from having some marijuana integrated into their treatment plan. Like everything though, marijuana can have its downsides if someone over consumes or if the plant just doesn’t agree with their system. Regardless of who you are and your opinions on the substance, the benefits are well-documented and thousands of people find relief through marijuana on a daily basis.
