12 of The Best Ever Songs From Shahrukh Khan Movies

Admit it, when you think of Shahrukh, you think of the open-armed loverboy who is unabashedly romantic and unapologetically sanguine.

It isn’t like Shahrukh he hasn’t done non-loverboy movies (in fact, SRK has been in top gear whenever he donned a unique avatar), but it’s the love stories, particularly their songs, that have perched him 10 steps ahead of his fastest peers.

Here are the most resonant and soulful songs from Shahrukh Khan movies:

Aey Ajnabi (Dil Se)

That’s as different an Udit Narayan as you could get. Ae Ajnabi goes unbridled with its romanticism as AR Rahman’s tunes go from soothing to heart-rending.

Mehdi Laga Ke Rakhna (DDLJ)

The eternal shaadi wala gaana which can easily qualify to be a romantic song, Mehandi laga ke rakhna made the whole nation dance to its Punjabi dhols and gentle melodies.

Tujhe Dekha to Ye Jaana Sanam (DDLJ)

So, before Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan took over, Kumar Sanu was belting hits, one after the other, for SRK and other superstars. DDLJ was an album adorned with great songs. It also had its own little competition going on between Tujhe Dekha and Mehandi Laga ke Rakhna for the best song. There was no loser!

Kal Ho Na Ho (Kal Ho Na Ho)

Shahrukh’s character, Aman Mathur, won and broke many a hearts, and this melody justifyingly summing everything thing up.

Dheere Jalna (Paheli)

Take a bow, Sonu Nigam! This song happens to be one of the least popular of all hit songs, which is what brings us to the tag “underrated”

Suraj Hua Maddham (Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham)

Egypt, pyramids, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol – gracing them are Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik’s vocals. How can you not be haunted and hooked by Suraj Hua Maddham!

Dil to Pagal Hai (Dil to Pagal Hai)

Another album/song which was a rage for over an year, Dil to Pagal Hai shattered all the previous records and created new, as the title track and the Bholi si Surats and Dholnas were played endlessly on those cassette players, day in and day out.

Bholi Si Surat (Dil To Pagal Hai)

How I wish we could have heard more of Uttam Singh, the man behind this magic-melody of the Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai.

Aey Kaash Ke Hum (Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa)

His pursuit of Ana seemingly over, Sunil is lost in the moments that are poignant to an unusual degree, so much so that you could draw them out through a watercolour painting.

Tere Liye (Veer Zaara)

The first song by Roomkumar Rathod for SRK, and boy, was it a start. Tere Liye in Veer Zaara is one of those melodies that take you back to those leisurely loops of tinted romance in the mustard fields of Punjab.

Chaiyyan Chaiyyan (Dil Se)

Shahrukh Khan and Malaika’s moves on the train-top were further buoyed by Sukhwinder’s powerful voice and, well, Gulzar Saab’s sublime lyrics.

Tauba Tumhare Ye Ishare (Chalte Chalte)

Abhijeet has always taken pride in the fact that his voice blended beautifully with the Rahul/Raj persona of SRK. They have given a dozen hits before Tauba Tumhare.. but it sure will stand among the best of those.

*****

There are many, many more unforgettable Shahrukh Khan songs that will remain timeless and go down in history among the best ever songs of Hindi cinema. For now, let’s relish the few that made the list.
