Review: The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is rock and roll revelry – Rediff.com movies

I called that first Avengers hit a hero-sandwich, and this is certainly dessert. I, for one, still haven’t been able to wipe the pixie-dusted grin off my face. It does what the best summer blockbusters do, the larger-than-life megamovies that drop our jaws in theatres: it indulges our fantasies and makes kids out of us again, kids who want to play with our toys and who have fun watching the director play with his.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron may well be a mainstream milkshake of a film, but it is one of those madly indulgent shakes — featuring Snickers bars and dark chocolate sauce and gourmet coffee and spiked with a few swallows of something decidedly adult. Something that’ll keep you giggling and energised and awake far longer than it should.

It’s all operatically mad, and the city-destroying final confrontation is becoming a bit familiar, but Whedon carries it off with such joy and even a kind of evangelism. His script is a thing of wonder, jam-packed with great lines: I loved Stark’s wearied remark: “I’ve had a long day … Eugene O’Neill long …” And the unresolved romantic and sexual tension between Black Widow and Hulk creates a weird driving force to the narrative:

The last outing of these superheroes — Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye — amassed a mind-boggling $1.5 billion internationally and if anything, the latest film is likely to shatter that record.

And Joss Whedon and his team of Avengers — in spandex and metal — will make these two-and-a-half hours worth your money. They will fight and they will banter, they will level cities and angst about the darkness in their past and present, and they will romance. In short, they will give you bang (literally) for your buck.

The new movie is a sleeker, faster, funnier piece of work – the sort of sequel (like “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” “Superman II” and “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” before it) that shrugs off the self-seriousness of its predecessor and fully embraces its inner Saturday-morning serial.

The Hollywood Reporter, Todd McCarthy

Rating: 3/5

Avengers: Age of Ultron succeeds in the top priority of creating a worthy opponent for its superheroes and giving the latter a few new things to do, but this time the action scenes don’t always measure up and some of the characters are left in a kind of dramatic no-man’s-land.

HitFix, Drew McWeeny

Rating: 4/5

This is a movie that is almost exhaustingly large-scale, and Ultron’s ultimate plan involves a crazy visual idea that Whedon makes sort of beautiful and eerie. It’s got so much action that I’m going to bet some audiences go numb after a while. But in scene after scene, there are beats and stunts and poses that suggest that an army of comic book fanatics worked on this movie.
