5 Greatest Hacks to Make Old Carpets Look Brand New

Do you have a carpet that you badly want to get rid of, but at the same time, you can’t afford to get a new one? Tell me about it.

As home design website Home Refinery often notes, area rugs and carpets are among the most focal home decor accents noticed by guests.

If your entire floor is covered with an age-old rug, getting new ones planted will surely cost you a fortune. But do not fret. We have the perfect solution to get you out of this predicament.

Most often we neglect taking care of the very essential part of our lovely home – the carpet. But if you could only adopt a few additional chores to your weekly routine, your carpets don’t have to look so dull and ancient all the time.

Unless your carpet is severely damaged and stained, we present a few ways to keep them looking new and fresh, without spending a fortune. While we are a lifestyle blog for 20 somethings, we cater to the sensibilities of all. So here’s what all you want to know.

1. Declutter for Inspection and Action

First and foremost, you must get rid of everything and anything blocking you from thoroughly inspecting stains, dents and worn out areas on your carpet. Assign a helper to help you remove furniture and miscellaneous items from the way.

Once you have a better view of what’s going on, it’s time to take action. Most likely, you will notice bad and damaged areas on the carpet where the furniture has been.

You will also notice that some areas have been compressed by the weight of the furniture. Restore life back to the compressed area either by running your fingers through the dull area or by using a thick brush to do so.

If the area is dirty or stained, you have to grab your cleaning tools. That brings us to the next point.

2. Vacuum with Carpet Freshening Powder

In the supermarket, you will find an aisle full of carpet cleaners. Pick the one that’s suited to your carpet and get home to give your old carpet a fantastic makeover!

You can also use baking soda instead of carpet freshening powder, but the freshening powder will give off a nice scent after cleaning. If the condition of your carpet is pitiful, opt for a heavy-duty freshening powder.

Spread the freshening powder all over the carpet and let it settle according to the instructions on the product. Later, vacuum section by section, slowly and thoroughly.

Depending on the condition of the old rug, vacuuming should make it look better than before. However, if the carpet still looks dull and sad, prepare yourself for some deep cleansing to be instructed in the next sections.

3. Remove All Difficult Stains

If your carpet looks the way it does, that is because you’ve been putting off on cleansing old, difficult stains. Since now you have no choice but to do the dirty work, let’s get on with it!

Old and dry pet stains make carpets look unattractive and disgusting. They also smell.

Moisten the dry stain area with a mixture of water and detergent. Let it soak until it’s soft. Then, apply pet carpet cleaners and vacuum on the affected area, and follow through the instructions on the product until it’s squeaky clean.

To remove bad odor, spray the area with a mixture of vinegar and water, and let it soak for a few minutes. You can do the same to remove old coffee stains.

Blood and Ink Stains

In case of removing blood stains, always use cold water, since blood coagulates in warm water. Use carpet stain remover as instructed. Warning you though, you have to repeat the steps a couple of times for the stain to completely disappear.

Lastly, old ink stains can be removed with isopropyl alcohol, even present in hairsprays, white wine, nail polish removers, and vinegar. All you need to do is dab the stained area with a piece of cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

4. Get Rid of Furniture Marks

Furniture marks worry all carpet owners. There are two methods to get rid of the marks – ice cube method and iron method.

Ice Cube Method

By placing an ice cube on the marked space, wait for a while for the ice to melt and soak the area. Blot the area, then use a spoon to fluff up the area back to its original state.

Iron Method

Wet a towel and wrung it dry. Place it over the marked area, and iron over it. Iron for about a minute, then you can either use a brush or your fingers to fluff up the area.

5. Steam Clean without Professional Help

You don’t need professional equipment to steam clean or shampoo your carpet. But before you steam clean, you must vacuum first, so that all the basic dirt and grime are removed by the vacuum cleaner.

To operate the steam cleaner, you will need some water and carpet cleaning solution. Carpet shampoos are easily available in the supermarkets. However, you must not add too much shampoo in the mixture, as it may damage the carpet.

Give plenty of time for the carpet to dry after you have thoroughly steam cleaned the entire room. Don’t step on the wet carpet with shoes on. If you must step on it, wear socks or plastic bags.

The shampoo or the carpet cleaning solution you will use will leave a scent in the room after you’re done cleaning it. Air the room properly to avoid getting sick.

Takeaway

Cleaning the carpet of the entire house is a dire job. But without proper maintenance and care, it will surely wither.

You don’t always have to spend heaps of money to keep your house looking great. Investing in a good carpet vacuum cleaner or carpet steam cleaner today will generate benefits in the future for sure.

When you think about all the cost associated with investing in a brand new carpet for the entire house, getting a good carpet cleaner sounds like a better investment by far.

As long as you’re aware of the current hacks, nothing can hinder you from living the life you’ve always dreamed of.
